There’s a howl in the night. Somewhere, deep in the dark woods of Bulgaria, a pack of wolves stir. They’re hungry, thirsty, and they’ve just spotted their next meal. The black dogs, with eyes that glow in the moon’s light, swarm on their targets, humans unaware that they are being tracked until the beasts are upon them. And then, just as their tongues lick across their sharpened canines… a lot of “oooo”s and “awww”s ensue.

How the New Hellboy Faithfully Adapts, Remixes, and Changes the Comics Author’s note: We’re going deep into the Hellboy comic books here, so potential spoilers for the comic books only. Every time a superhero or comic makes the leap to the big screen there are things that get left by the wayside, things that are kind of the same, and then some things that are just exactly what they were on the page. The new Hellboy is no different, and though this is by no means an exhaustive list of all the above, here’s everything we learned on the set of the new Hellboy with regard to its comic book basis:

Director Neil Marshall unleashed a definitive modern classic in 2005 with claustrophobic cave terror The Descent. He injected new life into the sparse sub-genre of werewolf horror with Dog Soldiers, and has directed some of the most action-packed, breathtaking hours of television in Game of Thrones, Hannibal, and Westworld. Well versed in horror with a proven track record, there’s perhaps no better director suited for Hellboy, a reboot more grounded in realism and faithful to the comics on which it’s based. Most exciting of all, though, is Marshall’s steadfast belief in using practical effects.

Apocalypse is on the horizon, which means it’s time to choose sides. Unfortunately, that’s a particularly difficult task for Hellboy (David Harbour) in the upcoming movie that shares his name. On the one hand, he’s an experienced monster hunter who has spent years battling to keep the human world safe from supernatural threats. On the other hand, he himself is a big red demon who is destined to bring about the end of the world. It’s a tricky balance that’s hard for anyone to figure out — particularly the trigger-happy human soldier who fires a shot at Hellboy at the beginning of the film’s first trailer.

Fans are getting pretty excited about getting the full trailer for the upcoming Lionsgate Hellboy reboot, but trepidation is a part of the game, too.
