Star Trek Beyond’s new trailer rips the Enterprise apart

When director Justin Lin jumped from the Fast & Furious franchise to Star Trek Beyond, it promised an even bigger emphasis on adrenalized action, and the movie’s latest trailer seems to support just that.

The clip, which was debuted during a fan event this evening hosted by Adam Savage, shows Chris Pine’s James T. Kirk getting into scrapes after the Enterprise is ripped open by a torrent of alien vehicles and the crew abandons ship. They’re the kind of space escapades that should thrill fans of the franchise reboot, and as it turns out the hardcore are the ones that will get to see the finished product first. During the event, it was announced that the movie will have its world premiere on July 20th during San Diego Comic-Con, in a outdoor IMAX presentation complete with a live orchestral score, one-upping the surprise Star Wars concert that was the high point of last year’s convention.

Lin is taking over from J.J. Abrams, who rebooted the series into a more rock ’em, sock ’em timeline that first resonated with audiences, before hitting a false note with the release of Star Trek Into Darkness. (That film’s insistence on playing games with the true identity of Benedict Cumberbatch’s character didn’t sit well with many, either.) To shake things up for Beyond, Simon Pegg stepped in to co-write the film with TV writer Doug Jung (Banshee, Big Love). Those not at Comic-Con will be able to see Star Trek Beyond when it lands in theaters on July 22nd, and that’s just the beginning: Bryan Fuller is readying his new CBS All Access series, set to debut in 2017
